Governments worldwide are increasingly focused on regulating AI, yet significant gaps persist between their ambitious policy goals and the technical tools required for implementation. Speaking at ICML, one of the premier machine learning conferences, Lisa addressed this pressing challenge.
Her presentation unveiled findings from an in-depth analysis of policy documents from the EU, US, and China, highlighting critical disconnects between governance frameworks and the technical expertise and infrastructure necessary to support them. She emphasized the need to bridge these divides by:
-Catalyzing technical innovations that address governance challenges.
-Strengthening technical capacity within policymaking institutions to enable effective regulation.
Lisa’s call to action underscored the importance of integrating technical advancements and policy development, advocating for closer collaboration between AI researchers and policymakers to create robust, actionable governance solutions. A transcript and slides from the talk are available here.
