Advancing Sustainability in Semiconductors
This workstream is centred around the question of how Europe can strengthen its technological competitiveness and achieve the green transition at the same time. Semiconductors play a crucial but double-edged role in this: They are pivotal for a variety of climate-neutral technologies but also have a high carbon and environmental footprint regarding their production and operation.
We aim to address this challenge by combining and structuring knowledge from both a technological and a sustainability standpoint; and by identifying key problems and opportunities in reducing the climate and environmental impact of chip manufacturing. The goal is to support policymakers, industry stakeholders, civil society organizations and academia in finding effective measures to advance sustainability in semiconductors that is aligned with Europe’s climate and environmental goals, while still fostering Europe’s technological prowess.
