Online advertising is becoming more and more important in political campaigns. However, in contrast to broadcasting, there are few specific rules for this in Germany. That is why voluntary commitments for fair campaigning by political parties now play a role in Germany. In an article for the Federal Agency for Civic Education ("Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung"), Julian Jaursch discusses what such codes of conduct can and cannot achieve, what experience other countries have made with this and how parties use them in the German federal elections. The German-language article also talks about the "Campaign Watch" initiative by 22 civil society and academic organizations (including SNV), which calls on parties to develop codes of conduct.
